Railworkers strike on Wednesday 9 over railway reform

Brussels, 08/10/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 9 October, railway workers are expected to carry out a number of different activities to demonstrate against the 4th railway package. The European Transport Workers Federation (ETF) is organising a day of action ahead of the “Transport” Council on 10 October. This Council will be looking at the safety dimension in the 4th Railway package before the European Parliament's transport committee votes on the entire package on 26 November. The day of action promoted by the ETF is expected to have repercussions on the Austrian, Belgian, Croatian, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Luxembourg, Polish, Spanish, Swiss and British railways. The deputy secretary general of the organisation, Sabine Trier, explained that the Commission proposals are unacceptable and, “ignore the social consequences”. She referred, in this connection, to the compulsory call for tenders for public passenger transport services and provided a warning about protecting workers in cases where contracts were awarded on “the goodwill” of the local authorities but which resulted in, “competition based on wages and working conditions, where the cheapest option is chosen”.
