Pilot project to prevent match fixing in football

Brussels, 06/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 5 September, the committee on civil liberties of the European Parliament (EP) approved a pilot project aiming to make it easier to detect match fixing in football in the EU, according to a press release issued by the parliamentary committee. The project is based on “better communication between the betting companies, sports organisations and the national and European authorities”, the committee states. Amongst other things, the project suggests national hotlines to allow people anonymously to report matches which have been fixed. The project will receive funding of €2 million, the committee added. In February of this year, the European police agency Europol said that it had dismantled a match-fixing network in Europe which had affected 680 games, including some in the Champions League and 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Europol identified 425 people responsible, both players and criminals, in 15 countries. (SP/transl.fl)
