Head of government Juncker under threat

Brussels, 10/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 10 July, Jean-Claude Juncker, Prime Minister of Luxembourg for 18 years, was threatened by a protest vote of parliamentarians on his management of the intelligence service. A motion of no-confidence that the opposition parties could submit on Wednesday evening could prompt his departure and bring about early elections in October (the date of 20 October has been mentioned). Juncker did not offer his resignation to the parliamentarians on Wednesday. However, there are whispers that the parties are already preparing their campaign. If the early elections go ahead, Juncker would need coaxing to head of the Christian Socialists list, the main political formation of the country. Other names are also being mentioned - in particular, Viviane Reding, who has been at the European Commission for almost 15 years. (LC and EL/transl.fl)
