Directive on file sharing now transposed by all

Brussels, 01/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - Two infringement proceedings, one against Spain and one against the United Kingdom, for failure to respect the EU directive on file sharing (multi-ownership in shared time, Directive 2008/122/EC) have been closed, announced the Commission on Thursday 31 May.

Spain has notified the Commission that a new law (decreto ley) transposing the directive into Spanish law has been introduced, whereas the United Kingdom has now fully transposed the directive in Gibraltar.

On 22 March 2012, the Commission ended the infringement proceedings against Lithuania, Poland and Slovenia and all 27 EU member states have now transposed the directive into their legal systems (the initial deadline was February 2011). The Commission's persistence has paid off, to the benefit of consumers in Europe, commented Commissioner Viviane Reding.

The Commission will now be checking to ensure the rules have been introduced properly in all the member states. (AN/transl.fl)
