01/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - Likelihood of boycott of Euro 2012. French Youth and Sports Minister Valérie Fourneyron announced on Thursday 31 May that “no member of the (French) government will attend matches in Ukraine” of the Euro 2012 football tournament to be jointly hosted by Poland and Ukraine, because “we feel European values should be respected, particularly in view of the Tymoshenko situation” (former prime minister Iulia Tymoshenko is currently being held in prison). She said that the foreign minister had informed the Polish and Ukrainian governments of the decision on Wednesday. “This position was shared with (German Chancellor) Angela Merkel, (European Council President) Herman Van Rompuy, and (European Commission President) José Manuel Barroso and tomorrow, Friday 1 June, we shall be holding a meeting on closer cooperation in EU security policy at which the position as a whole will be set out”, she stated, adding that “we all have to face up to our responsibilities”.
