Brussels, 20/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Saturday 18 February, the EU high representative for foreign affairs welcomed the voluntary, well-organised and peaceful transfer of the first residents of the Ashraf camp in Iraq to Camp Liberty, renamed Camp Hurriya, the same day. Catherine Ashton congratulated the Iraqi government and the residents of the camp for the commitments made and the flexibility shown, which had enabled this transfer of 400 residents. She explained that “continued good cooperation from both sides will allow UNHCR to pursue its verification process, and to make determinations of refugee status in line with the memorandum of understanding signed on 25 December 2011. These next steps are essential components of a peaceful humanitarian solution to the situation”. She also congratulated the UN, particularly Special Representative Martin Kobler. She reiterated her support for his work to help the process and the continuation of safe transit to Camp Hurriya, as well as the peaceful and safe relocation of residents. Catherine Ashton is committed to continuing discussions with European ministers on how the EU can continue to provide optimum support towards a peaceful and sustainable solution to this humanitarian problem.
Camp Ashraf provides accommodation to 3400 Iranians who are hostile to the regime in Tehran. Its evacuation is due before April 2012. The High Commission is expected to examine the situation and grant them refugee status, which will enable them to leave Iraq. (CG/trans/fl)
