Brussels, 20/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - On 14 February, France, Belgium, Greece and the United Kingdom broke up a people-smuggling ring bringing illegal migrants from Afghanistan to the EU, in a joint operation supported by Europol and Eurojust, the two organisations reported in a press release dated 17 February. Six people were arrested during this operation, which took place over the course of a year. The migrants paid on average €10,000 to travel to Greece, then France via Turkey and from France to the United Kingdom, the two organisations explained. The main organiser of this network was in Greece and brought on average between 120 and 160 migrants “per week” into various member states, with a total of 5,000 people over 10 months, state Europol and Eurojust, making profits of up to €18 million.
