Brussels, 08/12/2011 (Agence Europe) - Alexander Rondos is to be EU Special Representative to the Horn of Africa after being appointed to the post by the Council on Thursday 8 December. The appointment of a special representative forms part of a recently adopted EU holistic strategy for the region (Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan and Uganda). Rondos, a Greek diplomat, will have the task of actively contributing to regional and international efforts to achieve lasting peace, security and development in the region. Initially, however, he has been asked to focus on Somalia and the regional dimensions of the conflict there, as well as on piracy off the Somali coast. (AN/transl.rt)
