Füle calls on Belarusians to play still stronger role

Brussels, 08/12/2011 (Agence Europe) - The “key elements” of Belarusian society must play an even stronger role, stressed the commissioner for neighbourhood policy, Stefan Füle, speaking on Wednesday 7 November. “But the key parts of Belarusian society, including civil society, the independent media, and the political opposition, must play an even stronger role”, he said during a conference entitled: “Transforming Belarus: Ways Ahead”.

The commissioner explained that these key figures of society must “work closely together to reach out to the broader Belarusian population, to offer a clear democratic alternative to the current regime, and to ensure that they engage with all those who wish for reform”. He stressed that a “strong and unified approach will be crucial”, especially when it is a matter of pressing for free and fair parliamentary elections next year.

Stefan Füle pointed out that the EU does not underestimate the significant challenges that Belarusian society will have to face, saying: “I salute your courage and continue to offer you our full and unwavering support”. (CG/transl.jl)
