Brussels, 29/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - The repression in Belarus is “unacceptable”, said EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle on Tuesday 29 November. “The level of repression against the political opposition, as well as civil society and the independent media, by the regime of President Lukashenka is increasing and is frankly unacceptable”, Füle told representatives of Belarus' seven main opposition parties and movements, adding that the country is “high on the agenda of the EU”. The commissioner wants to “strengthen our dialogue with the opposition and civil society in Belarus and offer the people there a clear vision for a better, European future”. “Belarus needs a strong and united opposition capable of providing the Belarusian people with a clear democratic alternative to the current repressive policies of the regime”, he added. He also reiterated the Union's commitment to get back round the table with the official authorities in Minsk as soon as all political prisoners have been freed and rehabilitated. (CG/transl.fl)
