Brussels, 29/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 28 November, the EU and the United States threatened Iran with new sanctions because of the possibility that the country's nuclear power station-building programme is being diverted to make nuclear bombs. In a joint statement, the EU and US say that they are considering further measures given Iran's persistent failure to respect its international obligations. They expressed profound concern about the possible military dimension of Iran's nuclear programme, expressing determination to make sure that Iran meets its obligations and cooperates with the International Atomic Energy Agency. They added that they want to work towards a diplomatic solution.
Diplomatic sources suggest that on Thursday 1 December, the EU's Foreign Affairs Council is expected to issue new sanctions against Iran. (CG/transl.fl)
