European toy safety campaign just before Christmas

Brussels, 29/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 29 November, the European Commission launched a pre-Christmas campaign on how to purchase the safest toys and use them risk-free. A video clip will be broadcast on television channels throughout Europe, which will describe what points need to be taken into account. At the same time, a postcard providing safety advice will be distributed to consumers throughout the EU when they purchase toys. Commissioner for Industry Antonio Tajani stated: “This year, toys sold in the EU will be safer than ever, and my campaign will enable parents to make the right choices for their kids.” He also welcomed the fact that the media and hundreds of shops were participating in this campaign throughout the EU. In an effort to back up the new European security rules in force since July 2011 (see EUROPE 10423), the European Commission is sponsoring a campaign based on advice that should not be forgotten when parents purchase toys or when children play with the toys, such as: never buy toys that do not have the CE marking; do not buy toys with small detachable parts for children under 3 years of age; read all warnings and recommendations; keep an eye on children when they are playing; always buy toys from trustworthy shops and online outlets and always report a safety problem with a toy to the manufacturer or the retailer where you bought it. Many toyshops in Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Greece, Romania, Spain, France, Italy, Ireland, Austria, the United Kingdom and Portugal will be distributing postcards containing toy safety advice.
