Merkel says crisis is worst since 1945

Brussels, 14/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 14 November, German Chancellor Angela Merkel repeated Germany's commitment to the euro at the conference of her party, the CDU. She reiterated her opposition to pooling European debts. We need “more Europe, not less”, she said. “If Europe is not going well, then Germany is not going well”, she said, pointing out that 60% of the country's exports go to the European Union. imilarly, “if the euro fails, then Europe will have failed”, the chancellor stressed. Angela Merkel acknowledged the gravity of the crisis: “Europe is possibly experiencing its most difficult period since the Second World War.” However, “Europe will emerge from this crisis stronger”. The measures favoured by Berlin: “we want automatic sanctions against anybody infringing the stability and growth pact”. She renewed her calls for a financial transaction tax, also supported by France, to be set in place. (LC/transl.fl)
