Brussels, 14/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 14 November, the spokesperson to High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton, stated that “the European Union does not recognise the constitutional and legal framework” within which the elections held on 13 November in the breakaway region of South Ossetia took place. “The European Union reiterates its support to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as recognised by international law”, he explained in a press release. He also stressed the “importance of the Geneva International Discussions in ensuring the security and stability in the region”.
The presidential elections which took place on 13 November are the first elections since the independence of the breakaway region, which is recognised by Russia. (CG/transl.fl)
