EGF - unprecedented aid to Ireland

Brussels, 14/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - Ireland is to receive aid of nearly €35 million from the Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF), the EU Council decided on Monday 14 November. The decision had hitherto been delayed for internal procedural reasons (see EUROPE 10492). The amount corresponds to the accumulation of three requests for intervention from the Irish authorities to assist nearly 6,000 workers made redundant in the construction industry, architecture, mechanical engineering and technical trials sectors. To date, this is the largest EGF intervention. The fund has responded to some 80 requests and provided nearly €350 million. No fewer than 76,000 workers have benefited from support. (JK/transl.jl)
