Brussels, 07/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Union hopes to support political reform begun by the new regime in Burma/Myanmar, announced David Lipman, EU Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, speaking on Monday 7 November. On the sidelines of a seminar on financial reform and the reduction of poverty in Rangoon, Lipman underlined that major changes are underway in the country and that the European Union hopes to give true support and encouragement for this movement to gather momentum.
The EU, like the United States, is still calling for the release of all political prisoners, of whom there are said to be around 2,000. Nonetheless, the regime's new approach towards the democratic opposition and the international community are appreciated. (CG/transl.jl)
