Brussels, 07/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - The EU is extremely concerned at the continued action against the civilian population in Syria, despite the agreement reached by the country's authorities on 2 November on the Arab League plan for an end to the violence. “It is extremely worrying that killings at the hands of security forces continue, despite the commitments made by the Syrian authorities to the Arab League”, said Maja Kocijancic, spokeswoman for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton on Monday 7 November. In view of the gravity of the situation, EU foreign ministers will again discuss the situation in Syria at their meeting next Monday, 14 November, she added. Ministers could put in place fresh sanctions against Syria at this meeting. Kocijancic stated that it is essential that the commitments made by the Syrian authorities towards the Arab League are followed through fully and urgently if they are to have any credibility. Rifle fire and bombardment by the regime's security forces have claimed the lives of more than 70 people since 2 November, mostly in Homs in the centre of the country. (CG/transl.rt)
