Brussels, 07/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - Left-wing and right-wing political leaders in Greece were seeking on Monday 7 November to conclude their intense discussion in order to form a new government of national unity, the day after what was deemed to be a historic agreement between the two main parties, under pressure from the country's creditors. The name of Lucas Papademos, the former vice president of the European Central Bank, has been mentioned in the media as the new prime minister to replace George Papandreou. The new executive will have the task of ensuring ratification and implementation of the European bail out plan for Greece, before beginning the procedure leading to early legislative elections in February 2012 instead of spring 2013. Nonetheless, only the right wing of the four opposition parties has for now openly consented to take part in the new government of national unity. The eurozone and the IMF also trust firm commitments will be taken before the next loan of €8 billion can be released in application of the fist rescue plan dating back to spring 2010. Papandreou has given his assurance that the new government will ensure Greece keeps to its commitments under the European agreement. Greece's Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos is expected to keep his portfolio as vice-president of the new government, media reports say. (LC/transl.jl)
