07/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - Electricity, EU must invest more in networks. If the EU wants to achieve clean energy production by 2050, it needs to almost double its investment in electricity networks between 2020 and 2030, in the view of the European Climate Foundation, in a report published on Monday 7 November. In order to achieve its climate objectives by 2020 - 20% reduction in CO2 emissions and share of renewables increased to 20% of its energy mix - the EU needs to increase its distribution lines by 14%, or 42,000 km, already, at a cost of €628 billion over the current decade. For the next decade, this cost will rise to €1,200 billion, the Foundation explains. If the objectives are met by 2020, the share of renewables could be increased to 50% by 2030. The challenge of this scale requires innovation in the field of funding, the Foundation adds. (EH/transl.fl)
