Brussels, 14/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European commissioner for agriculture, Dacian Cioloº, promised on Tuesday 14 June to help develop greater transparency in the raw agricultural products markets by making a commitment to publishing short-term market forecasts in the autumn. During a conference on price volatility regarding raw materials, the commissioner said that “I will make a very concrete commitment: the EU will develop total transparency on short-term market forecasts in the autumn of this year”. This data will involve information on grain, oilseed, milk and milk products and meat, explained Cioloº. This will also require implementation of a system for gathering in data at a European level and through which EU member states can inform the Commission about the state of private and public stocks. Data about European intervention stocks will also be included, explained sources close to the commissioner. During the conference Cioloº pointed out that global food demand is much greater than in the past, “demand will increase quicker than supply at a global level and food habits will change” (an increase in demand for animal proteins). He indicated that “it is no longer possible in the 21st century to invest willy-nilly in agriculture because land and natural resources are scarce”. (L.C./transl.fl)
