Brussels, 14/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 10 June, the commissioner in charge of education, culture, youth and multilingualism, Androulla Vassiliou, awarded the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards in a ceremony in Amsterdam attended by Princess Margriet of the Netherlands. Six of the twenty-seven prize-winners were named “Grand Prix” laureates in recognition of their outstanding heritage achievements. The prize winning projects are as follows: (1) Antwerp Central Station, Antwerp, Belgium, (2) Pre-industrial buildings in Ademuz/Sesga, Ademuz, Valencia, Spain, (3) The Hackfall woodland garden, Grewelthorpe, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom, (4) Architectural heritage of the Buffer Zone in the Walled City of Nicosia, Cyprus, (5) Szymon Modrzejewski, Uscie Gorlickie, Poland, (6) Weald & Downland open-air museum, Chichester, West Sussex, United Kingdom. The commissioner affirmed that “all the winners represent extraordinary accomplishments in cultural heritage and will serve as inspiration to professionals and volunteers, without whom in many cases our heritage would be at risk”.
