Brussels, 14/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - During his visit (12-15 June) to the Palestinian territories and to Israel, the president of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, called for peace talks to resume. “The wind of change blowing throughout the region provides a very good opportunity for Middle East peace talks. Israeli and Palestinian leaders must seize the moment of change in the region for a historic peace agreement”, Buzek said after a meeting with the Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, in Ramallah on 14 June. The EU, including the EP, supports the two-state solution on the basis of the 1967 borders. “There should be mutually agreed land swaps and Jerusalem should be the capital of both states”, Buzek stressed. The EP also supports the agreement of Palestinian reconciliation (between Fatah and Hamas) and backs the creation of a unity government under the leadership of President Mahmoud Abbas, Buzek said. The government “must renounce violence, accept Israel's right to exist and respect all previous accords”, he stressed. (H.B./transl.jl)
