Brussels, 14/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - In a statement, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton has given a cautious welcome to the formation, on Monday 13 June, of a new government in Lebanon, to be led by Prime Minister designate Najib Mikati. The new government will be made up of 30 ministers, with Shiite Hezbollah and its allies dominating, holding a total of 19 posts. While the formation of a new government brings to an end almost five months of political stalemate, Ashton it is only with publication of the ministerial declaration on the reform agenda that it will be possible to determine possibilities for EU cooperation with Lebanon. “The European Union expects the new government to uphold Lebanon's international obligations including with respect to the UNSC resolution 1701 and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon”, she said.
