09/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - Action Day on 21 June. Following on from its Athens Congress on 16-19 May which focused on economic governance (see EUROPE 10380), the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) is organising a European and national action and information day in Brussels on 21 June. The message of the European trade unions is clear: “European governance means strengthening - not attacking - its social model”. For the ETUC, European governance means working for a more social and inclusive Europe for all citizens, particularly the young. The responsible economic governance recommended by the ETUC must be geared to access to stable and quality jobs, the generalised promotion of training for all, decent wages, and strong social protection. Purchasing power, the level of pensions and access to quality social services must be defended and secured, says new General Secretary Bernadette Ségol. (G.B./transl.rt)
