09/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - Progress in discussions between Russia and Georgia on Russian accession to WTO. Discussions between Russia and Georgia at the WTO on market access, the final obstacle to Russia's joining the WTO, “are not going round in circles”, said Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze, commenting this week on the postponement of the latest round of talks scheduled to take place on 2 June in Geneva. Switzerland, which is mediating between Russia and Georgia, asked for additional time to draft a number of proposals. Georgia is still demanding that Russia observe its 2004 commitments which provide for trade with Georgia through legal border crossing points and the legalisation of the customs posts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, rebel Georgian provinces recognised by Russia as independent states following the 2008 war.
