Brussels, 27/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - The EU welcomes the fact that not only President Saleh but also the Yemenite opposition have agreed to the plan for addressing the crisis suggested by the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC). The plan, which may be signed during an extraordinary meeting of GCC foreign ministers on Sunday 1 May in Riyadh, provides for the formation of a national reconciliation government and, one month later, the resignation of President Saleh (who would be guaranteed immunity). A presidential election would then take place within 60 days. “I welcome the news that both the ruling party and the opposition coalition have accepted the GCC transition plan proposed on Thursday 21 April, including its provision for the rapid formation of a national unity government”, Catherine Ashton comments in a statement on 27 April. The EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy thanked the GCC for this initiative which “represents the best chance for Yemen to address the economic, social and security challenges ahead, and to avoid escalation of violence”. Ashton calls on all parties to rapidly finalise and sign the agreement “for the benefit of all Yemeni people”. (H.B./transl.jl)
