Brussels, 22/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - France has finally given up on its plans to appoint a government commissioner within Arcep, the French telecom regulatory authority. This proposed move raised serious concerns in the European Commission which had been considering opening infringement proceedings, fearing a threat to the independence of the national regulator (see EUROPE 10311). The Bill transposing several European directives, including the telecoms package, has been passed by the French parliament. The provision that would have allowed a government appointee to join Arcep was introduced by the government while the text was being examined by MPs. (I.L./transl.rt)
