Call for immediate government-opposition dialogue

Brussels, 22/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - The EU has once again called on Albanian political leaders - from both the government and the opposition - to begin dialogue in order to break out of the political crisis which dates back to the general elections of June 2009 and which is now proving a stumbling block to Albania's application to join the EU. “It is of the greatest importance that the dialogue between the political forces in Albania, and also between the political forces and the institutions resume immediately”, stated European External Action Service (EEAS) Director for the Western Balkans Miroslav Lajcak in Tirana on 22 March. “The reason I am here in Tirana once again is that we still do not see any honest efforts being made to institute political dialogue in the country”, he told press. He also highlighted the importance of the local elections on 8 May, which the EU considers as something of a “test” of Albania's political maturity. (H.B./transl.rt)
