21/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - Additional €3 million for Bangladesh. The European Commission has earmarked a further €3 million in humanitarian aid to assist the most vulnerable persons hit by Cyclone Aila, which devastated Bangladesh in May 2009. The decision, announced on Tuesday 21 December, brings to €15 million the aid provided by the Commission in response to the disaster. This year's monsoon season has exacerbated this already serious humanitarian crisis. Displaced populations, which have been prevented from returning to their homes, are still living in precarious conditions and “struggle to re-establish their livelihoods”, stresses Kristalina Georgieva, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response. The population of Bangladesh lives traditionally from fishing and farming - two sectors that have been severely damaged. (A.N./transl.jl)
