21/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - Full marks for Cancun. Monday's Environment Council welcomed the results of the climate conference in Cancun. The EU27 considered the agreement allows immediate action to be taken, that it builds the foundations for a comprehensive agreement post-2012 and that it is praiseworthy for having reconfirmed the multilateral negotiation process under the aegis of the United Nations. They stressed, however, that it was urgent to reach a binding comprehensive agreement next year in Durban and that the EU should have a clear energy strategy to this end. Breakthroughs made in Cancun include the establishment of an adjustment framework, ministers point out, as well as an agreement on political approaches to reduce emissions from deforestation and the degradation of forests, the establishment of a green climate fund and the technology transfer mechanism, provisions on the transparency of efforts made, and the will to increase the level of ambition of commitments to comply with the 2° Celsius rule.
