EU decides on sanctions against Gbagbo camp

Brussels, 13/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Union decided on Monday to take sanctions against the camp of outgoing president of Côte d'Ivoire, Laurent Gbagbo. The EU27 have taken “restrictive measures” against Laurent Gbagbo and his entourage due to their refusal to recognise the victory of Alassane Ouattara in the presidential elections of 28 November. The European foreign ministers, meeting in Brussels, adopted a visa ban on travel to Europe and a freezing of financial assets for anyone who “blocks the national process of peace and reconciliation and, in particular, threatens the results of the electoral process”. These measures will target leaders who refuse to accept Ouattara's authority. In the meantime, the armed staff of the two presidents faced each other on Monday in Abidjan close to the hotel where the Ouattara government has taken up position. (B.C./transl.fl)
