Brussels, 06/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - “The situation after the liberation of Aung San Suu Kyi is experiencing a new dynamic” and even though they took place under the control of the authorities, the electoral campaign and elections of 7 November “also helped to dynamise the situation”, said Piero Fassino, the special envoy of the EU for Burma, in an interview with EUROPE. Meeting us on Wednesday 1 December on the sidelines of the session of the European Security and Defence Assembly (ESDA), Fassino laid particular emphasis on the support which the international community could provide to obtain “further steps forward, towards a genuine democratic transition of the country”, including calling on the authorities in power “to open and accept (…) consistent, genuine and sincere” dialogue with the Burmese opposition and the ethnic communities. We must obtain “the liberation of all political prisoners”, of whom there are around 2000, we must get the authorities to stop “all types of oppression of the ethnic communities (…) and above all, we must ensure that a genuine dialogue is open between the military junta, the opposition led by Aung San Suu Kyi, and representatives of the ethnic communities”, he said. He went on to state that the EU must “reinforce cooperation” with those Asian countries (Indonesia, Thailand, India and China) which “can and must” play an essential role and, at the same time, help “this transition process with an active and concrete strategy”. An official delegation of the EU, led by Fassino, is soon to visit the country, but the exact date of the visit has not yet been confirmed. (A.By/transl.fl)
