Brussels, 06/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - Greece is on the “right track to deliver on its reform agenda” and implement the economic and structural reforms agreed as part of the European rescue plan, José Manuel Barroso told the press in Brussels on Monday 6 December after a meeting with the Greek Prime Minister, Georgios Papandreou. The 2011 budget of the country must be enough to reach the objective laid down to reduce its fiscal deficit, allowing the countries of the Eurogroup to make available a second tranche of €6.5 billion of the European loan to Greece on 19 January 2011, announced the President of the European Commission. This second tranche of aid will come on top of the additional funds to be released by the IMF at the end of the month, he said. Mr Barroso also expressed the support and solidarity of the Commission with the Greek people, who must make major sacrifices in these “historical times for Greece and Europe”. Mr Papandreou stressed that his government was carrying out reforms to save the country, but also in a “spirit of solidarity" with the EU and the Eurozone. He said that he was in favour of issuing eurobonds (see also related article) and of a “limited revision” of the Treaty to make the crisis management mechanism in the Eurozone permanent.
