Brussels, 06/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 3 December, the Telecoms Council adopted conclusions on broadband (“European Broadband: investing in digitally driven growth”). These conclusions welcome the European Commission communication adopted in September which sets a target of access to internet of above 30 megabits per second (Mbps) for at least 50% of households in Europe, by 2020. The Council says that it will be important to invest effectively and to put in place genuine competition in new generation broadband networks and services. For this, it calls on the Commission to bring forward a proposal by 2011 in cooperation with the EIB and in collaboration with the member states, to support broadband financing and to issue guidance for public authorities on use of EU funds for open broadband access project design and preparation.
