Council supports action plan for road safety

Brussels, 06/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - At the Transport Council on Thursday 2 December, the transport ministers of the EU supported the principal objective of the new European action plan for road safety, which is to halve the number of victims of road traffic accidents by 2020. By adopting conclusions on road safety, the Council has given its approval to the action plan in this field, which was presented by the European Commission in July of this year (EUROPE 10185). Particular attention will be paid to the most vulnerable users of the road, such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, say the ministers, who also stressed the “urgent need” to pay attention to reducing the number of people suffering injuries on Europe's roads. The Council also calls upon the Commission to look into possibilities of harmonising, if appropriate, the rules of the road in Europe. It also calls for a better exchange of information on infringements of these rules and stepping up vehicle security measures throughout their life-cycle. (A.By./transl.fl)
