06/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - Estonia says Rail Baltica could be operating by 2012. Estonia's Economic Affairs and Communications Minister Juhan Parts said on Thursday 2 December that it was “realistic” to assume that passenger rail transport would restart on Rail Baltica, one of the Trans-European Transport Network priority projects, by 2012. Trains will travel at 120 km/h on existing tracks between Warsaw and Tallinn. The problem currently facing the project - the different track gauges between the Polish system and that of the three Baltic republics - could be resolved with the introduction of an automatic mechanism. Latvia and Lithuania have backed this move, a press release from the Estonian government says, confirming their willingness to contribute to developing the project. Parts met his counterparts in Brussels on Thursday, on the sidelines of the Transport Council. European Commission representatives also attended the meeting. (A.By./transl.rt)
