Brussels, 04/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - Statements made on Wednesday 3 November by the environment commissioner, Janez Potoènik, who is greatly concerned by the waste crisis in Campania, were echoed in the Italian press on Thursday 4 November at a time when the region is witnessing violent clashes in order to prevent waste from Naples being deposited at a number of sites in the surrounding district. European institutions are calling on the Italian authorities to take immediate action to meet this emergency. Commissioner Potoènik had spoken along these lines after meeting Italian Environment Minister Stefania Prestigiacomo, to whom he expressed the Commission's concern. “We are continuing to monitor the situation closely but measures must be taken”, he said. Potoènik plans to send experts to the spot. Community sources, cited by the ANSA agency, have said that Italy could be taken before the Court of Justice if the situation does not improve.
