Young people want to rid Europe of poverty

Brussels, 02/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Fourth World People's Universities conference will be held in the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in Brussels on 8 November. The theme will be “Joining with young people to rid Europe of poverty and exclusion”. The conference marks the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. EESC President Staffan Nilsson and ATD Fourth World Delegate to the European Union Marie-Cécile Renoux will chair the meeting.

In the morning, the conference, using specific examples as starting points, will discuss themes related to youth and poverty in Europe: education, training and the place of very poor young people in society. In plenary session in the afternoon, participants will share their thoughts and questions and make proposals for individual, public and political action, leading to a debate. The conference will be brought to a close by Leila Kurki, President of the EESC Section for Employment, Social Affairs and Citizenship or Maureen O'Neill, chairwoman of the Standing Study Group on the European Year 2010 and Isabelle Perrin, Deputy General Delegate of ATD Fourth World.
