New commitment between Romania, Georgia and Azerbaijan supporting gas inter-connection between them

Brussels, 14/09/2010 (Agence Europe) - The Romanian president, Traian Basescu, and the president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, are expected to meet their Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliev, on Tuesday 14 September in Baku, to adopt a political declaration renewing their support for the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania interconnection project. This meeting will take place in a backdrop to the conference on energy security. Last May, in Tbilisi, the three countries signed a memorandum of understanding on their energy cooperation and the setting up of a joint committee for putting into practice their energy interconnection project. This project will facilitate the transit of liquefied Azerbaijani gas through Georgia and into Romania. The interconnection will allow for an estimated maximum gas capacity of 8 billion m³ to be transited on an annual basis. A joint enterprise between the three partner countries is due to be set up in Bucharest, this autumn. The cost of the project is hovering between €4 and 6 billion. (E.H./transl.fl)
