THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/georgia

26/07/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 26 July, the Council of Ministers of the EU decided to extend by two years, until 14 September 2012, the mandate of the EU observation mission to Georgia (EUMM). This mission, which was first deployed in October 2008, is mandated to monitor the implementation of the agreements of 12 August and 8 September of the same year, which were concluded further to Russia's intervention in Georgia. It is tasked with helping towards the stabilisation and normalisation of the situation in the areas affected by the conflict, observing the deployment of Georgian security forces and ensuring that all parties involved in the conflict (Georgian nationals, but also South Ossetians, Abkhazians and Russians) observe human rights and humanitarian laws.
