Brussels, 26/07/2010 (Agence Europe) - As anticipated, the “General Affairs” Council of Monday 26 July adopted a raft of targeted restrictive measures against Iran, following on from resolution 1929 of the United Nations Security Council regarding the Iranian nuclear programme (EUROPE 10187). The “accompanying measures”, which come on top of the implementing decision of the UN resolution, target the fields of trade, financial services, energy and transport that were identified by the June European Council as target areas. The package also draws up an extended list of people (and entities) subject to a visa ban and asset-freezing, which has been imposed on Iranian banks, the Guardians of the Revolution (IRGC) and the national shipping limes (IRISL), amongst others. In conclusions adopted on this subject, the EU did not, however, reiterate its wishes to reach a diplomatic solution on the issue of Iranian nuclear power. On Sunday, however, the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned against the new regime of sanctions, stating that Tehran would react “firmly”. The United States and Australia have already adopted similar measures and Canada is set to follow suit shortly. (A.By./transl.fl)
