27/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 27 October, the Council decided to lift the arms embargo set up in 2005. In 2008, the EU had already lifted visa bans against Uzbek officials responsible for the brutal repression of an uprising in Andijan in 2005. Lifting the arms embargo rewards the country's commitment to improve rule of law and the human rights situation and to encourage the Uzbek authorities to take further measures, the Council states in its conclusions.
