Brussels, 27/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - The first “Languages through Lenses” prizes of the Prix Europa festival were awarded, with the support of the European Commission, in Berlin on Saturday 24 October. This prize rewards young talents producing artistic video clips reflecting Europe's linguistic diversity and promoting multilingualism. A Public Choice Award was presented to the production which obtained most online votes. “Diversity is a source of enrichment, which is why our societies must evolve from being multicultural to intercultural. This requires one essential ingredient -dialogue, to give the different communities within our societies the means to communicate with each other,” said Multilingualism Commissioner Leonard Orban. In total, 28 short films in competition were screened in the foyer of the Festival Venue. The five jury prizes were given to “No Fishing from Estonia” by Richard Meitern, “The Babel Show” by Stephane Kaas, “De pratglada kossornas park” by Oskar Westerberg, “Language is Music” by Peter Palos and “Smile” by Charles Temujin Doran. The Public Choice Award went to “No Fishing from Estonia”. The Europa Prize, which was launched in 1987, has grown into Europe's largest competition for television, radio and emerging media. The new “Languages through Lenses” award category was created following the success of the “Languages through lenses” contest held in 2008 thanks to cooperation between the European Commission, Prix Europa and European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA).
