GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/postal services

11/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, the historic postal operators from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Luxemburg, Malta, Poland and Slovakia have expressed their support for a cautious approach in the debate on the liberalisation of the postal market. Before ending the current system, which reserves mail of under 50 grammes for the public operator, they feel it is essential to find solutions to the following critical issues: the funding of the universal postal service, the dangers resulting from social dumping and the putting in place of fair rules between market players. The twelve operators point out that three Parliamentary committees (regional development, employment and social affairs, and industry) and the European Economic and Social Committee have called for the full opening up of the postal sector to competition to be delayed until 2012.
