Visit of president of Council, Steinmeier, announces forthcoming denouement

Tripoli, 11/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - The acting president of the Council, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, accompanied by the commissioner for external relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, were in Tripoli (Libya) on Sunday in the hope of obtaining an end to the affair of the Bulgarian nurses and Palestinian doctor condemned to death, following accusations of having inoculated children with the AIDS virus. This denouement will be obtained by way of an agreement with the families of the victims, with whom a meeting took place on Sunday. According to a Libyan spokesperson, Steinmeier and Ferrero-Waldner assured the families of the EU's support for taking charge and freely treating the contaminated children. They also affirmed their support to the special aid fund to the victims' families set up in 2005 under an EU initiative. Discussions were also carried out by the families and EU, as well as the Bulgarian authorities, as part of the Kadhafi Foundation, headed by Khadafi's son, Seif Al Islam. The latter affirmed to the press on 28 May that signs heralding a denouement had soon appeared after the negotiations on 10 May 2007. He provided assurances that representatives of the children had agreed to the results of these negotiations. According to Al Islam there is hope of a speedy resolution to the crisis. (fb)
