11/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - In Luxembourg on Monday, the European agency for the management of operational cooperation at the external borders of the member states of the EU, Frontex, signed a working arrangement with the Ukrainian border security service, with a view to improved cooperation. Ukraine is often seen as a new “border guard” of the European territory. Hundreds of immigration hopefuls wishing to enter the EU are held in its detention centres. A ministerial meeting was also held on Monday between the Ukraine and the EU troika on readmission and visa facilitation agreements, border management in the fight against terrorism and organised crime. Amongst those taking part in this meeting were the Ukrainian justice minister, Oleksandr Lavrynovych, the German interior minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, and the European commissioner, Franco Frattini.
