Frontex intercepts more than 900 illegal immigrants in eastern Mediterranean

Brussels, 11/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - A recent operation carried out by Frontex in the eastern Mediterranean led to the interception of more than 900 illegal immigrants, according to a press release issued on Monday by the European border agency. The first phase of the operation entitled “Poseidon 2007”, which began in mid-May, ended last week and led to the capture of 910 illegal immigrants on the maritime and land borders of the eastern Mediterranean. These illegal immigrants came mostly from Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq and Albania. For the duration of the operation, 194 fake or falsified travel documents were seized, 88 illegal immigrants were returned to their country of origin and 13 go-betweens were arrested. “Poseidon 2007” is a combined operation covering the land borders between Greece and Turkey, Greece and Albania, Bulgaria and Turkey and the eastern, central and south-eastern parts of the Aegean Sea. Greece, Italy, Latvia and Malta took part in the operations. Further Poseidon operations will be carried out this year in the region. (bc)
