18/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - At its AGM on 13 October, the 'Union des Federalistes Europeens - Belgique (UEF-Belgique) elected Michele Ciavarini Azzi as its President, Jean-Jacques Schul as Vice-President and Domenico Rossetti as Secretary General. UEF-Belgique called for the ratification process of the European Constitution to be continued, aware that after the listening, reflection and debating process, it would be difficult to present citizens with the same text, ratified by fourteen Member States and rejected by two. The UEF-Belgique says the word Constitution should only be used for Parts I (the EU's objective competences etc) and II (Charter of Fundamental Rights), whittled down to no more than 50 pages. The Belgian federalists also call for the EP to hold a Conference of Parliaments to debate fundamental European issues with national parliaments, and back the idea of holding a Convention of European Citizens. It says the European Parliament should be prepared to play a constituent role. UEF-Belgique pledges to organise an awareness raising and information campaign ahead of the 2009 European elections.
