Brussels, 18/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, the EU Council adopted without debate a decision on the appointment (from 1 November this year) of Erwan Fouéré, an Irish national, to the post of EU Special Representative for the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Mr Fouéré will be replacing Michael Sahlin, who has held the post since 12 July 2004. In order to take the development of political relations between the EU and FYROM into account, Mr Fouéré's function will be a double hatted one as he will also be Head of the European Commission Delegation in Skopje, succeeding Donato Chiarini.
During his tenure (from 1 November 2005 till 28 February 2006, renewable upon Council decision), Erwan Fouéré will have the task of contributing to consolidation of the political peace process and full implementation of the Ohrid framework agreement in order to facilitate the accomplishment of further progress on the road to European integration as part of the stabilisation and association process. Mr Fouéré's previous posts include Head of Delegation in Slovenia, South Africa and Mexico.
