Brussels, 18/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - With a view to resuming negotiations on the EU's financial perspectives on the basis of a new proposal from the British EU Council Presidency expected for November, delegations of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR) headed by their president, Claudio Martini (who is President of the Tuscany Region and member of the Committee of the Regions), and their Secretary General, Xavier Gizard, met the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, in Brussels on 10 and 11 October, together with Regional Policy Commissioner Danuta Hübner and British European Affairs Minister Douglas Alexander. The CPMR representatives reasserted their “belief that an ambitious regional policy in line with the European Commission's proposals is a vital prerequisite for achieving the Lisbon and Gothenburg objectives”, a press release states, adding that Douglas Alexander, for his part, had expressed the wish to “remain in close contact with the CPMR over the coming weeks”. President Barroso affirmed that a compromise on the financial perspectives should be reached as soon as possible to avoid European paralysis and to show citizens that, on the contrary, Europe is on the move. President Martini was in full agreement with these comments “except if it is not a quality budget”, Mr Gizard said.
